PostGIS Installation

PostGIS is installed as an extension to the PostgreSQL database and then configured for use in each database that requires the use of spatial data types. You will need to learn how to install the PostGIS extension and how to configure it for your database.

Goals/Objectives/Outcomes

• Understand how to install the PostGIS extension in a PostgreSQL installation.
• Understand how to configure the PostGIS extension for use in a PostgreSQL database
• Understand how to inspect a PostGIS installation using management functions in sql queries
• Understand the tools used to manage PostgreSQL databases including PgAdmin III

Measures of Success

• Participant has successfully installed PostGIS into a PostgreSQL installation

• Participant has demonstrated the ability to inspect the PostGIS configuration using management functions
• Participant has inspected the range of sql functions available in a PostGIS enabled database using PgAdmin III
